DEMO REELS HELP DESK

Do employers put emphasis on demo reel titles?

Q: Anonymous asks:

Question #1: Do employers put a lot of emphasis on the title, or just the content? I haven't finished my intro title yet, and was considering doing a k.i.s.s. title. For the ending credits, they are just going to be white on black fonts, nothing fancy. Any suggestions on intro titles and ending credits would be appreciated, i.e. what to include.

Question/Comment #2: When I send out my reel, I am going to include my resume, a couple prints of examples of my work, i.e. Photoshop and life drawing skills, conceptual sketches showing the process I went through to make my demo reel, and a storyboard insert about my demo reel.

Question #3: While I am waiting for my computer to render.....I am going to send out examples of my work to employers. I am going to post my examples, and resume on my FTP site. Any ideas of what to include, and what resolution is acceptable for viewing pictures on the web would be appreciated.

A cool opening is a very good way to demonstrate your 3D logo capabilities. Doing a nice cool animated open (but short) shows more of what you can do.

Ending credits should be eliminated. You should only add your name and telephone number (email too perhaps) I've seen demos with Produced by - Directed by - Modeled by - Animated by - and so on. The person watching YOUR demo reel will most likely know that this is your stuff.

That's good... but send the right material to the appropriate place. Some places don't need to see sketches and Photoshop images, while others will. Do a little research first - and save yourself some money. The bottom line is, people are going to want to see your animation. They may not have or take the time to go through sketches of your demo reel process, unless there was some innovative methods you used to get the job done. If you can land an interview from your reel, the storyboard and process sketches would be better used then.

When posting on your site, don't put everything on one page. Start with small thumbnail JPG's and a description. Interested parties can then click on the image to see a full size version is they want. Give the web surfer options.

I would advise against overly fancy titles - unless you're demoreel is [really] hot, you'll just end up anoying people.

All of the above are good ideas - its nice to see someones thought rocesses as well as the final work - but do make them easy and quick to look over.

Make stills of the best shots - extra little one offs showing great modeling/texturing also help. 800X600 or 1024X768 resolution are best. DON'T over do the jpeg compression - theres nothing worse than some beautifully subtle lighting being ruined by bad compression artefacts.

Make your images high quality, print worthy (250-300 dpi at least) then flatten image, (duplicate so you won't ruin original) then drop down dpi to 72 and make a .jpg you can use between 7-10 compression. This is how I show my clients examples of actual print work for there approval, and quality is still really good and it won't take forever to download, ...things to remember, CMYK and RGB, changing an image to CMYK after it was done in RGB you lose some color-----sometimes boost up contrast and saturation more than you think might be correct in RGB and when you change it to CMYK it will still look almost like original constructed image...hope this might help, it works for me,
