Key Light

The principal light source is a directional spot. Typically, it is offset from the center line of the subject and positioned to the front.

The vertical orientation can set the mood.
Back Light

This type of lighting highlights the top of the object. In this way, the object is separated from the background.

The backlight is generally a directional spot.
Fill Light

A flood or soft (spread) spot is positioned at the vertical angle opposite of the fill light.

This light slows the shadow fallof from the key light.
Side Light

Usually a directional spotlight is placed to the side of the object.

When a key light is present, the side light is placed so it comes in from the opposite side.

Kicker Light

A directional spot is set behind the object and to one side - usually, it is shines from below.
Background Light

A light source, say a spot, illuminates the background and the set.
