Zero's Seamless Texture Tips (in 12 easy steps!)
Written by Zero Dean

Having made well over 3,000 seamless textures in the last couple of years, I offer some tips on making seamless tileable textures...

1) Make texture (for my example, I use a 128X128 texture)

2) Go up to FILTERS, select OTHER, then choose the OFFSET. If your image is 128X128, then choose a horizontal and vertical offset of 64 (half the image). Make sure the "WRAP AROUND" box is checked. Select OK and run filter. Now the seams of your image are in the direct center. All you need to do is...

3) Paint out the seams using the CLONE tool (or whichever tool you prefer, I love cloning though). Once that's done, you can play with the offset settings (set them to 32 or something) to make sure you haven't inadvertently made new seams.

You're done. But wait, there's more...

For perfectionists:

4) Select ALL your tiled image

5) Go up to EDIT, select DEFINE PATTERN

6) Create a new image much larger than your tiled image... I usually pick something like 512X512

7) Go up to EDIT, select FILL and choose "Fill using PATTERN".

Voila, your 128X128 tiled image is tiled into the 512X512 image. Now you can see how it tiles and also see if it looks really repetitious or not.

You're done. But wait...

Even more if you want to make touch ups within a certain area in the 512X512 image...

8) Make any of your touch ups in the 512X512, but don't stray outside of a 128X128 area of space. When done...

9) Go to the marquee options and set the STYLE to FIXED SIZE. Set the fixed size to 128X128.

10) Now move the marquee over the area that you touched up. Everything you did should fit within the marquee or you'll end up with a seam.

11) See step 5

12) See step 7

You're done... But wait (no,no...heh, can't give away all my knowledge). ;)
