In May 2000, 3D ARK achieved an amazing milestone -- we received our 1 millionth visitor!
It's awesome, but it didn't come easy. As you may have heard, it has been a rough couple of years.
3D ARK grew in popularity so quickly that for the first 2 years we were forced to bounce around from one web host to the other to find one to meet our needs.
In January of 1999, we went down for just over a month as a result of strains put on our webhost's server. We lost site traffic, but inevitably gained momentum and not only regained our previous traffic, but much more.
This led to a massive spike in popularity (Editor's Choice Awards from Netscape, AOL, Go Network...etc) and resulted in 3D ARK and related sites going down mid November 1999 after severely overloading the server they were on (and also crashing the entire web host).
We finally decided that acquiring an expensive dedicated server as well as a web host which could handle the demands of our increasing popularity and server needs was of utmost importance. It took time, but we finally purchased a dedicated server and found a decent web host. Only problem is, we again took a big hit as far as traffic goes... Five months is a long time to be out of business. Fortunately, we rapidly began to gain on our losses.
But the technical difficulties keep on coming...
In late June 2000 we went down again (only for 10 days), as a result of a fatally crashed hard drive (the second one in 2 months, the first being recoverable). Unfortunately, the backup we had of the server drive was corrupt, so we were forced to upload each site manually. Various CGI scripts were lost because they were not part of these seperate backups and so we are still in the process of reinstalling various software.
We appreciate your patience during these difficult times as well as your support as we work to make 3D ARK and the 3D-ALLIANCE better than ever before. We look forward to serving the 3D community in full again soon. Please know that the creator of 3D ARK, Zero Dean, is doing all he can to see that this process happens as effectively and efficiently as possible.
